Newsom’s In, Whitman’s Raising Dough

S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom officially threw his hat into the California Governor’s race today.  He and current Lt. Governor John Garamendi are now the only two “officially” announced Democrats.  Will this spark a fire under Attorney General Jerry Brown or LA Mayor Antonio Villragoisa’s seat?   I guess we will all see in time.

Newsom used various social networks–twitter, facebook, and youtube–to get the word out.

Here is the video he sent out to all his friends, fans, and followers:

A few topics he touches on in the video are: universal health care, education, his “Rainy Day” fund in San Francisco, green jobs, and solar power.

He also mentions equality, but it’s seems to be sort of slipped in.  Is Newsom trying to play down his gay rights image for the more conservative class?

Newsom’s official announcement was also featured on Huffington Post. (Thanks to thedreamlord for sending this link my way.)

Meanwhile, over at Meg Whitman’s campaign…

Deputy Campaign manager Todd Craney sent out an email today to inform folks that Whitman is on track to raise $5 million by June 30.

Also included in the email is a blurb about a recent letter Whitman sent last week to Ron Nehring, the California Republican Chairman.  The letter stated Whitman’s opposition to Props 1A, 1B, and 1C, and urged the party to announce the same stance  at its executive committee meeting, which was held on April 18.

The party did in fact announce its opposition to the props at the meeting.  However, it also voted to oppose Props 1D, 1E, and 1F, which are supported by Whitman.  Whoops.

Here is the link to Whitman’s letter:

Stay tuned, more on the way.

P.S. Sorry for lagging.  I am a student, and this past week was crazy.  I promise to be a better blogger.

A Past Event For Mayor Newsom

The initial idea for this blog started when I was sent to cover one of Mayor Newsom’s recent town halls for my school paper.

Posted here, for you, is the video of that town hall.

BTW, I don’t think my voice sounds that nasally.

More to come soon.

Why I exist (as a blog)

So, here’s the deal: I’m going to cover the race for California’s soon-to-be-vacant Governor’s seat.

That’s right, Arnie’s leaving next year and bunch of people want his place, including the former President and CEO of eBay, the mayor of San Francisco, the current Insurance Commissioner for the state, the former Dean of UC Berkeley’s business school, and (maybe) a guy who already was Governor and is now the Attorney General.  And since this is still early in the ball game–not even the first inning–we’re sure to see more players scramble onto the scene as the months progress.

My goal:  I will gather as much info as I can, roll it up into a nice little ball, and then deliver it to you for your pleasure.

I’m going to look across party lines, look at the issues being discussed, those that aren’t being discussed, and everything in between.

If you’re from California, then you probably have some interest in this campaign, especially if you find yourself on one side or the other of such issues as: gay rights, “nationalized” health care, what to do about the environment, education reform, the recession, unemployment, immigration, and the amazingly weird supermajority in the legislature–among many others.

If you don’t hail from this state, then perhaps you’ll just be interested in seeing who succeeds in taking the Governator’s place.

Won’t you join me for this little adventure?  I promise it’ll be fun… or at least something enjoyable to look at during work.

P.S. I’ve never done a blog before, so please bear with me.
